‘Little Creeps’ puts the awesome back in B movies

MLive has just released a review of ‘Little Creeps’, a movie featuring cheerleaders and zombies (a winning combination, surely?). It describes the film as an ’awesomely bad’ movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously. We don’t know about you, but to us this sounds like the perfect B horror movie.

The film stars various actors who are best known for their performances in classic TV shows such as ‘Saved by the Bell.

Apparently it’s being released on ‘video’ (we assume IMDB means DVD – after all, we’re not still living in the 90s) shortly. If we hear any more details we’ll update this post.

Your survival kit

I’ve been putting a lot of thought into what should constitute my essential zombie survival kit, ever since realising that you could search for it on Amazon and come up with a decent list of ideas. However, I’m thinking that whatever I take, it’s going to have to be light and easy to carry – I’m not the strongest or most athletic of people and I’m going to need to run fast with this kit on my back.

So my list currently includes:

Supernoodles/Ramen/ration packs.
Sleeping bag (one of those super thin, expensive ones – worth the extra cash for something so portable and effective).
A few clean underwear (because otherwise, just, ew).
Small first aid kit (I figure anything really big and I’m probably becoming a zombie anyway).
Smoke pellets (defensive weapon? Helpful for hiding?)
Ordinance survey maps.
Leatherman.
Small gas stove.
My horse (yes, I have a horse. No, she won’t be able to carry loads more stuff – she’s old, and she’ll probably slow me down, but there’s no way I’m leaving her behind).

Oh yes, and Mr Beckett.

now it’s over to you – what would you take? It’s like Desert Island discs, but practical!

‘Paranorman’ trailer

This trailer’s been out for a few weeks now, but I thought it was worth posting all the same. ‘Paranorman’ is the latest offering from Laika – the studio that brought us ‘Coraline’. ‘Paranorman’ is the tale of a young boy who can see ghosts, who ends up having to save his town from zombies – the traditional, slow walking, slightly funny kind, rather than the all-out-terrifying evolved kind from ’28 Days Later’.

This film is not only a good thing because, well, it looks awesome. It’s also great to see a family movie tackle the zombie threat; teaching our kids from a young age about how to survive should the dead ever rise from their graves.

Seth Grahame-Smith at the Festival of Books

Seth Grahame-Smith, writer of ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ and ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’ (which is being made into a movie that’s coming out this year, natch) recently spoke at the Los Angeles Festival of Books. In his discussion something that stood out for us zombie fans was that he said that we ‘need zombies’ as they are metaphor for what our culture fears. More than that; in the olden days we had sabre toothed tigers and woolly mammoths: now our fears are more pedestrian – debts and car crashes. Zombies spice things up a bit.

Personally I have a feeling that when the apocalypse comes, we’re all going to be wishing for the times when our biggest fear is going over our overdraft.

Map of the Dead

Some enterprising chaps have created a Google Map style website that is specially designed for those of us who worry about where we’re going to find supplies when the zombie apocalypse hits. Map of the Dead gives details of local hardware and food stores and hospitals. In the UK there’s a dearth of gun stores, but if you’re in the US you’re pretty much sorted for weapons. There’s also a handy colour grading that let’s you know where specific danger zones might be.

I’m feeling better looking at the map near where Mr Beckett and I live, and knowing that we’ve got a whole load of food shops and hospitals nearby for supplies. However, as we suspected, there are a lot of worryingly red spots near us. Damn universities and shopping stores.

Breaking news, folks: the long-awaited origins story to Romero’s classic film is going to be filmed entirely in CGI, using stop motion effects such as those utilised in Avatar, Beowulf and TinTin. There’s an interesting discussion going on about this over at ScreenRant. Some clever guy has pointed out that while stop motion techniques can suffer from ‘uncanny valley’ syndrome, zombies might well be the perfect creatures to pull it off – after all, Gollum was different enough to really work in Lord of the Rings…

Do you have an emergency meeting place?

One of the first things Mr Beckett and I did when we discovered our mutual interest in zombies, was to discuss potential meeting places. If we’re in different parts of the country/world (very possible with Alex’s job), where would we aim to get to to reunite? Of course, there’s the obvious place – our home – but what if it became impossible to stay there? So we compiled a list of places we would both attempt to reach, in order of priority:

Our flat.
Alex’s parents’ house (middle of nowhere; self-sufficient; gun store)
The British embassy in Paris (in case we could get out of the country)
The British embassy in Uganda (where we took our first holiday)

We’re hoping we won’t need more than those four. Our theory is, if I find one that seems safe then I’m to stay there until Alex reaches me.

Have you planned where you would reunite with your loved ones if you got separated? If you haven’t yet bear in mind a few factors:

Variety of location (in case you get separated by an ocean, say).
Memorable places (such as family homes or places with a shared memory – it’s easy to forget things when you’re panicking).
Who finds whom (you don’t want to all be going round in circles and never reaching the same place at the same time!).
Prominence of location (don’t arrange an obscure address – go for landmarks or big, obvious buildings that are easy to find).

Plight of the Zombie

Following our recent post about novel ‘Reanimated Americans’, there seems to be a slew of games, books and films that encourage us to empathise with the undead. The latest offering is ‘Plight of the Zombie’, a game for Android and iOS devices that allows you to feel the zombie’s hunger for brains.

You can read the official press release here. Although there’s no specific release date yet, the game is expected to launch ‘mid-2012′. So, anytime in the next few months, we guess.

‘Reanimated Americans’

Is it just me or does this book sound amazing? Author Martin Mundt posits an entirely different type of zombie: one that doesn’t attack and eat people, but instead walks around like a normal person, just… dead.
